Does watching haram content break the fast?
Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan
I'm ashamed to ask, but I ended up watching explicit videos on my phone during the day while fasting. Is my fast broken, or is it only a sin? I really want to stop.
Short answer
Watching haram content does not by itself break the fast, but it is sinful and can wipe out its reward. If it leads to ejaculation, many scholars say the day must be made up.
Detailed answer
Watching haram content, such as explicit videos, does not by itself break the fast in the technical sense, so you do not have to make up the day for the watching alone. But it is a sin, and it can destroy much or all of the reward of your fast. Fasting is not only about the stomach; it is also about the eyes, ears and heart.
What the Quran and Sunnah say
Allah says: "Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart, all of these will be questioned" (Al-Isra 17:36), and He tells believers to lower their gaze (An-Nur 24:30–31).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Fasting is a shield" (Bukhari, Muslim), and he warned: "Many a fasting person gets nothing from his fast except hunger" (Ibn Majah). The purpose of fasting is to build taqwa, awareness of Allah, and haram viewing works directly against it.
When is the fast broken?
- If watching leads to ejaculation, many scholars hold that the fast is broken and the day must be made up; others differ, so if you are unsure, ask a trusted local scholar.
- If it leads to touching yourself until ejaculation, the fast is broken according to most scholars; see does masturbation break the fast?
- In either case, keep refraining from food and drink until sunset and sincerely repent.
What to do now
- Repent sincerely: regret it, ask Allah's forgiveness and decide not to return to it. Allah loves those who turn back to Him.
- Block the path: install content filters, delete apps that lead you there and keep your phone out of your bedroom.
- Know your triggers: boredom, being alone late at night and endless scrolling. Plan something else for those moments.
- Find support: a trusted friend, imam or counsellor can help you stay accountable.
