Does vaping break the fast?

Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan

I switched from cigarettes to vaping. Some friends say vaping is fine in Ramadan because it's only vapour and there's no tobacco in it. Is that true?

Short answer

Yes, vaping breaks the fast: you deliberately inhale a liquid turned into vapour, which scholars treat like smoking. This applies to nicotine-free vapes too.

Detailed answer

Yes. Vaping, whether with an e-cigarette or a vape pen, breaks the fast just like smoking. The absence of tobacco or visible smoke does not change the ruling. Scholars and fatwa bodies who have looked at e-cigarettes treat them the same as cigarettes for fasting, and this also applies to vapes with no nicotine.

Why it breaks the fast

A vape heats a liquid, usually made of glycerine, propylene glycol, flavourings and often nicotine, and turns it into a mist of tiny droplets. You inhale that mist on purpose, so a real substance enters your mouth, throat and lungs, and part of it is swallowed. You can often taste the flavour. That is very different from smelling a scent in the air, and it is why vaping is treated like smoking a cigarette.

The fast is about holding back from what you desire between dawn and sunset. Allah describes the purpose of fasting as becoming mindful of Him (Al-Baqarah 2:183), and stepping away from a habit you crave is part of that training.

In practice

  • Do not vape at all between the start of Fajr and sunset.
  • If you vaped on purpose during a fasting day, repent and make up that day.
  • If you vaped because you forgot you were fasting, stop when you remember; your fast is still valid.

What about health?

Vaping is often promoted as a "safer" option, but it still carries health risks and keeps nicotine addiction going. Many scholars apply the same caution to it as to tobacco; see is smoking haram in Islam. Ramadan, when you are already stopping for long hours, is an excellent time to cut down or quit, and a doctor or stop-smoking service can help you make a plan.

Not the same as a medical inhaler

Some people ask whether an asthma inhaler is the same thing. It is a medical treatment, not a habit, and scholars discuss it separately; read does an asthma inhaler break the fast. Never stop prescribed medication without speaking to your doctor.

These answers give the general ruling based on the Quran, the Sunnah and the mainstream view of scholars. For a personal situation, ask a qualified scholar you trust.
