Do injections break the fast?

Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan

I need regular injections for a medical condition, and one of them falls on a weekday morning in Ramadan. Will an injection in the arm break my fast?

Short answer

No, medical injections such as insulin, antibiotics, vaccines or painkillers do not break the fast, according to most scholars today. Injections or drips that nourish the body do.

Detailed answer

No. Injections given for medical treatment, whether into a muscle, under the skin or into a vein, do not break the fast according to most scholars today, as long as they do not nourish the body. This includes insulin, antibiotics, vaccines, painkillers and similar medicines. Injections or drips that feed the body, however, do break the fast.

Why most injections do not break the fast

What breaks the fast is eating and drinking, and what takes their place. A medical injection does not enter through the mouth or nose, does not reach the stomach and does not take away hunger or thirst. Islamic fiqh councils that studied modern medicine reached the same conclusion, distinguishing between treatment and nourishment.

Which ones do break the fast?

  • Nutritional drips, for example glucose or feeding solutions, replace food and drink, so they break the fast. See does an IV drip break the fast.
  • Some scholars also advise caution with injections given mainly for energy or hydration; if you are unsure, ask a trusted local scholar.

In practice

  • If the timing is flexible, many people prefer to have non-urgent injections after iftar, to be extra careful and comfortable.
  • If your schedule is fixed, take your injection as prescribed. Never stop or delay medication without speaking to your doctor, ideally one who understands fasting.
  • A drop of blood at the injection site does not affect the fast.

Diabetes and insulin

Insulin injections do not break the fast, but fasting can change your blood sugar a lot. People with diabetes should plan Ramadan with their doctor and check their levels often. Read can people with diabetes fast.

Vaccines

Vaccines are medicine, not food, so they follow the same rule; see getting a vaccine while fasting.

When illness makes fasting hard

If your condition means fasting would harm you, the Quran gives a clear permission: "Whoever of you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days" (Al-Baqarah 2:184). Islam does not ask you to put your health at risk.

These answers give the general ruling based on the Quran, the Sunnah and the mainstream view of scholars. For a personal situation, ask a qualified scholar you trust.
