Can I donate blood while fasting?
Question · One of the most asked questions about Ramadan
Our mosque is hosting a blood donation drive in the afternoon during Ramadan. I would love to give blood, but I am worried it will break my fast. Is it allowed?
Short answer
Yes, most scholars hold that donating blood does not break the fast. Still, it is better to donate after iftar if giving blood would make you weak.
Detailed answer
Yes. According to most scholars, donating blood does not break your fast, because it is not eating or drinking. Giving blood to help save a life is a great good deed. Still, it is wiser to donate after iftar, when you can eat and drink to recover, especially if you tend to feel weak.
What the Sunnah says
Scholars compare blood donation with cupping (hijama), because both remove a fair amount of blood. Al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was cupped while fasting. He also reports that Anas ibn Malik was asked whether the Companions disliked cupping for a fasting person, and he said no, except when it caused weakness. On this basis, most scholars say giving blood does not break the fast but should be avoided if it will exhaust you.
Some scholars hold that cupping, and therefore a large blood donation, does break the fast, based on another hadith; if you are unsure, donate after sunset or ask a trusted local scholar.
Allah praises those who save a life: "whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all of mankind" (Al-Ma'idah 5:32).
In practice
- Evening donation is best. Many blood services and mosques run evening sessions in Ramadan for this reason.
- Daytime donation is allowed according to most scholars, but blood services usually advise eating and drinking before and after giving, which you cannot do while fasting.
- If you feel faint after donating, you may break the fast and make up the day later. Your health comes first.
Small blood samples
A small sample for a medical test is a different matter and does not break the fast according to almost all scholars; see blood tests while fasting.
Tips
- Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor the night before you donate.
- Have a good meal at iftar and wait an hour or two before giving.
- Follow the advice of the donation staff and of your doctor.
These answers give the general ruling based on the Quran, the Sunnah and the mainstream view of scholars. For a personal situation, ask a qualified scholar you trust.
